Yusuke Urameshi is the main protagonist of YuYu Hakusho.
He was voiced by Nozomu Sasaki in the original Japanese and Justin Cook in the English dub.
What Makes Him a Shonen Hero?[]
- Heroic/Honorable: Yusuke saves the world countless times and even brings Demon World in harmony through a democratic battle.
- Courageous/Reckless: Even when he is intimidated by his enemies, Yusuke refuses to run away from a fight and is willing to put his life on the line to protect his friends.
- Energetic: Yusuke is extremely hot-blooded.
- Stubborn: Yusuke is very rebellious and refuses to listen others in order to do things his way regardless of others' warnings not to take the risks.
- Pursues a Big-End Goal: After he gets fired as a Spirit Detective, Yusuke wants to look for his purpose after everything he has been through.
- Hard-Working: Once he becomes Genkai's mentee, Yusuke trains harder in order to gain abilities while honing skills he already has.
- Unintelligent: While Yusuke is rather street-smart, he is also impulsive, reckless and sometimes scatterbrained. Additionally, he is also severely book-dumb due to his truant lifestyle as he skips school on a daily basis. He even admits to having a 12% on a science test.
- Optimistic: Though he starts out as a cynical person, Yusuke develops a more optimistic outlook on life and values the good things in his life.
- Determined: Yusuke would push beyond his limits to save the world from dangerous foes.
- Confident/Cocky: Yusuke takes pride in his fighting abilities to the point of being fairly cocky and underestimating opponents who don't come off as a threat to him at first glance.
- Unpredictable: Yusuke uses his mischievous and chaotic tendencies to make his enemies lose their guard.
- Self-Sacrificing: Yusuke often risks his life to protect to the point of dying two times, only to be revived afterwards.
- Resilient: While Yusuke loses several times, he often his losses to get better and stronger.
- Youthful: Though jaded to an extent and not as consistently goofy as Kuwabara, Yusuke has a rather childlike nature beneath his tough-guy persona.
- Believes in the Power of Friendship: Yusuke gains his strength from how much he values his friends and turns his enemies into his allies.
- Oblivious to Love: Yusuke was initially unaware of Keiko's romantic interest in him.
- Possesses Plot Armor: Yusuke died two times throughout the series, only to be revived afterwards, the first through a kiss from Keiko and the second through the awakening of his demon energy.
- Spiky Hair/Pompadour: Yusuke has a fairly spiky pompadour.
- Short-Tempered: Yusuke can be quick to anger at times.
- Has Rivals/Mentors: Yusuke is rivals with Kuwabara and Hiei and he is mainly guided by Koenma, Botan and Genkai.
- Mischievous: Yusuke pulls pranks on his friends for fun, particularly Kuwabara and Keiko, as well as teasing Koenma for being in diapers despite being thousands of years old and generally makes wisecracks.
- Rebellious: Given his lifestyle as a juvenile delinquent, Yusuke has a huge disregard for authority and wants to live by his own terms.
- Tragic Past: When Yusuke was 3 years old, his father walked out on him and his mother Atsuko, leading her to raise Yusuke alone. Due to being a middle school dropout, Atsuko is unable to seek employment and instead resorts to prostitution. This lifestyle led to Atsuko becoming a neglectful alcoholic.
- These factors results in Yusuke becoming a delinquent who was never given a chance by anyone, as most people are judgmental of him for being a thug.
- Is a Blood Knight: Due to living most of his life fighting in the streets, Yusuke takes pleasure out of fighting strong opponents.
- Is a Challenge Seeker: After defeating Toguro in the Dark Tournament, Yusuke wants to fight opponents who can challenge his strength.
- Is a Delinquent: Yusuke spends much of his time skipping school, getting into brawls, smoking and gambling.
- This lifestyle has led to him gaining a reputation that caused him to be hated by his teachers and feared by most of his classmates.
- Is an Underdog: Yusuke is misunderstood by almost everyone around him, as he is hated by his teachers and feared by his classmates for his delinquent reputation, but very few people who are close to him know that he is a good kid who is highly capable of heroic deeds if given the chance.
- Is a True Hero: Yusuke has saved the world multiple times and is willing to risk his life to do so.

- Street-Smart: Yusuke's background as a street kid provides him with the cunning and resourcefulness needed to tackle supernatural threats.
- Is a Teen Hero: Yusuke becomes a Spirit Detective at 14 years old.
