NOTE: The profile is only about Wu Cheng'en from 2010 television series Wu Cheng'en and Journey to the West as Wu Cheng'en from the 2011 novel Wu Cheng'en and Journey to the West is currently not voted as Shonen Heroes.

Wu Cheng'en is the titular protagonist of the live-action television series Wu Cheng'en and Journey to the West. It is claimed that the character is based on his historical counterpart, though the claim is heavily disputed.

Wu Cheng'en was portrayed by Liu Xiao Ling Tong and Wu Cheng'en's young self was portrayed by Zhang Haotian.

What Makes Him a Shonen Hero?[]

  • Heroic/Honorable: Throughout the series, Wu Cheng'en has done heroic actions such as fighting against corruption, stopping the invasion of Ming Dynasty, protecting the monkeys, and relieving the starved people.
  • Courageous/Reckless: Wu Cheng'en seldom hesitate to stand against the unjust things such as corruption, and it often puts himself in danger, such as being arrested and facing capital punishment.
  • Stubborn: Wu Cheng'en refuses attend imperial examination and become an official, against his parents' will, after finding that the imperial examination is corrupted. Even when he becomes official, he refuses to be a corrupt official.
  • Pursues a Big-End Goal: Wu Cheng'en pursues to collect the stories of Monkey King and devote himself to writing the Journey to the West based on the collections.
  • Hard-Working: Wu Cheng'en devotes himself to writing the Journey to the West, which sometimes physically tires him.
  • Possesses Plot Armor: Wu Cheng'en has constantly encountered situations which could cause his death if his allies or supernatural abilities are not shown. A prominent example is that Wu Cheng'en survives being whipped 100 times and manages to leave the Yan Mansion with the help of a supernatural horse and his willpower motivated by caring of monkeys.
  • Short-Tempered: Wu Cheng'en has been enraged by people who attempts to destroy his Journey to the West several times. Wu Cheng'en are usually enraged by perceived unjust things, which has motivated him to do heroic and reckless actions.
  • Has an Idol: Wu Cheng'en is a fan of the stories of Monkey King.
  • Rebellious: Wu Cheng'en is rebellious for most of his life. Examples are that he refuses to kowtow to alleged corrupt officials and outright says that it is his own rule.
