Theodore Jasper "T.J." Detweiler is the main protagonist of the Recess franchise.
He is voiced by Ross Malinger in season 1 and then Andrew Lawrence after season 1.
What Makes Him a Shonen Hero?[]
- Heroic/Honorable: In the theatrical film, Recess: School's Out, TJ led the revolutionary of students and staffs of Third Street Elementary to stop Dr. Benedict's plan to ban summer vacation by producing an eternal ice age, saving the world in the process.
- Courageous/Reckless: TJ is willing to protect his friends even at the expense of himself and his reputation.
- Energetic: TJ is a fun-loving kid and enjoys pulling pranks.
- Stubborn: Whenever TJ takes a stand against injustice, he is usually the last to back down from a cause.
- Pursues a Big-End Goal: T.J. wants to ensure that school is fun and fair for everyone.
- Unintelligent: While he is a strategic prankster and schemer as well as being generally street-smart, TJ is very book-dumb as he receives a C- on a book report due to using a cover blurb, thinks "spy" is spelled S-P-I and has a 10.1% on a test.
- Optimistic: Though there are times where he falls into depression, those moments are far and in-between, as TJ manages to look at the brighter side of things.
- Determined: No matter what the odds are and how little chance he has of winning, T.J. refuses to back down from a cause to do what's right.
- Confident/Cocky: T.J. is highly confident with himself and can be overconfident at times.
- Resilient: While he has his share of failures, T.J. manages to rise up in spite of them.
- Believes in the Power of Friendship: TJ cares about his best friends and is capable of being acquainted with his enemies, including the school's resident snitch Randell Weems.
- Spiky Hair: Though he rarely takes off his cap, he is usually seen to have messy hair when he does take it off.
- Big Eater: TJ is shown to have a huge fascination with eating a high pile of pizza.
- Has an Idol: T.J. looks up to characters like Senor Fusion from his favorite comic books
- Has a Rival: Irwin Lawson is TJ's main rival, with whom he competes at sports.
- Mischievous: TJ is known for pulling elaborate pranks, going as far as to earn his nickname, Prankster Prince.
- Rebellious: TJ plays by his own rules and is the first to take a stand to any injustice.
- Is a Primary-Color Champion: T.J. wears a red hat, red shoes, a white T-shirt and blue pants.
- Is a Delinquent: Despite not having a criminal record of his own, T.J. often gets into trouble with Miss Finster and Principal Prickley for his elaborate pranks.
- Is a Challenge Seeker: TJ has no issue challenging corrupt authority figures like Miss Finster.
- Is a True Hero: T.J. has led the school into saving the world from an eternal ice age.
- Is a Mascot with Attitude: T.J. is a mischievous prankster who likes to play sports, hang out with his friends and rebels against authority.
- Street-Smart: Even though he has average to poor grades, T.J. is resourceful, creative and is able to think on his feet.
