Ratchet is the main protagonist of the Ratchet & Clank franchise, alongside his best friend Clank.
He is voiced by Mike Kelley in the first game, and by James Arnold Taylor in every following game, the latter of whom voiced Johnny Test in the TV series of the same name.
What Makes Him a Shonen Hero?[]
- Heroic/Honorable: Ratchet, alongside Clank and often Captain Qwark, have saved numerous galaxies from dangerous threats and villains, and sometimes even the entire multiverse and time itself. Some of these villains include Chairman Drek, Dr. Nefarious, Emperor Tachyon, Emperor Nefarious and many others. Saving billions of lives in the process. He also honored the sacrifice of General Alister Azimuth by keeping his omni-wrench to remember him.
- Courageous/Reckless: Ratchet is a thrill-seeker who loves adventure and the sense of danger. He frequently puts himself in harm's way to save day, although this can sometimes have consequences depending on the situation. He also has a habit of crashing his spaceships.
- Stubborn: Throughout the series, Ratchet has often struggled dealing with the duty of saving the galaxy or universe over what he wants personally wants to achieve. Such as not listening to Clank because he wants revenge on Captain Qwark in the first game. Or again, in Tools of Destruction, he wasn't listening to Clank because he wants to use the Dimensionator to reunite with the Lombaxes, even though it could cause great harm and destruction in the process.
- Pursues a Big-End Goal: While his main goal is to protect the galaxy from numerous threats and villains, he also wants to reunite with the rest of his species, the Lombaxes, and many games in the series have focuses on that desire.
- Hard-Working: Ratchet will do whatever it takes to save the day or to save his friends. This is especially notable in A Crack in Time, where half of the game is Ratchet trying to find and rescue Clank.
- Believes in the Power of Friendship: Ratchet is extremely close to his best friend Clank and is very protective over him, having come to his defense many times, both physically and verbally. A large portion of the Future trilogy and Rift Apart was Ratchet trying to find and rescue Clank.
- Possesses Plot Armor: Ratchet almost always survives dealing with some of the most dangerous enemies, planets, and arenas imaginable and still turns up OK in the end. The biggest example of his plot armor is seen in A Crack in Time, where he was killed by Alister Azimuth, only for Clank to rewind time by 6 minutes, thus reviving Ratchet.
- Short-Tempered: This is especially noticeable in the first game where, after being betrayed by Captain Qwark, Ratchet is in a fowl-mood and starts being rude Clank. In other games, his temper can be seen when he and Clank are disagreeing about something, and often when he deals with Captain Qwark.
- Has a Mentor: In A Crack in Time, fellow Lombax Alister Azimuth becomes his mentor, teaching Ratchet how to use his hoverboots and helping Ratchet find Clank and get to the Great Clock in order to bring back the Lombaxes.
- Has an Idol: In the first game, Ratchet used to idolize Captain Qwark. However, this quickly changed after he learned that Captain Qwark was a backstabbing fraud.
- Tragic Past: When Ratchet was born, his father, Kaden, had sent him away to another planet in order to save his son from Emperor Percival Tachyon. His father was killed by him, and the Lombaxes went to another dimension. Ratchet spent most of his life not knowing about the Lombaxes or his father's sacrifice. He is now one of the very few Lombaxes left in his universe and he's been searching for a way to reunite with the Lombaxes ever since.
