Quasimodo is the main protagonist of Disney's 34th full-length animated feature film The Hunchback of Notre Dame and its 2002 direct-to-video sequel The Hunchback of Notre Dame II.

He is voiced by Tom Hulce.

What Makes Him a Shonen Hero?[]

  • Heroic/Honorable: Quasimodo saves Paris from his sinister guardian Frollo, who attempts to execute his genocidal plan to kill all of the Romani people.
  • Courageous/Reckless: Quasimodo swings down from the tower to save Esmeralda from burning to death by Frollo.
  • Energetic: Quasimodo displays his energetic side through acrobatics, especially when he's ringing the bells or exploring Paris.
  • Stubborn: Though hesitant at first, Quasimodo participates in the Festival of Fools despite Frollo's demands.
    • In the sequel, Quasimodo continues to date Madellaine despite Phoebus's claims of her involvement in the robbery.
  • Pursues a Big-End Goal: After 20 years of being confined to the bell tower, Quasimodo desires a life of freedom and love within society.
  • Hard-Working: In spite of his deformities, Quasimodo develops superhuman strength and acrobatic skills as a result of working with the bells and climbing around the cathedral in order to endure the hardships of his lonely lifestyle.
  • Optimistic: Despite all of his hardships, Quasimodo manages to keep pursuing happiness in his life.
  • Idealistic: He believes in the power of love and kindness.
  • Determined: Though initially passive, Quasimodo develops a higher sense of determination, as seen as he manages to break free once he sees Esmeralda about to burn to death at the stake despite being heavily chained to the stone pillars atop Notre Dame.
  • Confident: Though initially having low self-esteem, Quasimodo gains more confidence thanks to experience s in the outside world and his friendship with Esmeralda and Phoebus.
  • Self-Sacrificing: Quasimodo is highly willing to put his life in danger to protect his loved ones.
  • Resilient: Despite his abusive upbringing, years of reclusive isolation and outcast status, Quasimodo refuses to let these setbacks define his life and instead be the best version of himself.
  • Youthful: Between his desire to live his life outside of the bell tower and his idealistic and fairly naive view on romance despite being in his 20s, Quasimodo has a childlike sense of wonder.
  • Believes in the Power of Friendship: Quasi gains his strength from his desire to protect his friends.
  • Possesses Plot Armor: If Phoebus didn't save him from falling into a pit of molten copper, Quasimodo would've died.
  • Short-Tempered: Though mostly a calm person, Quasimodo has an aggressive side, as shown as he attempts to fend off Phoebus, albeit unprovoked, to kick him out of the cathedral despite the latter not wanting to fight.
  • Rebellious: Given his yearning for freedom, Quasimodo defies his guardian Frollo's orders and follows his own path.
  • Tragic Past: When Quasimodo was a baby, his parents were sneaking into Paris until they were spotted by Frollo and his soldiers. With his father taken prisoner, his mother was chased by Frollo until she was killed by the judge while he took the baby away from her. Appalled by the infant's deformities, Frollo attempts to drown him until the Archdeacon stopped him and demands him to atone for his sins by raising the child.
    • Frollo then took Quasimodo in and raised him in the bell tower while emotionally abusing him into viewing himself as a monster and forbidding him from leaving the bell tower. Frollo's toxic upbringing causes Quasimodo to have a very low self-esteem and a desire for freedom.
  • Forgiving: He easily forgives those who have wronged him, especially Esmeralda.
  • Is a Primary-Color Champion: Quasimodo has red hair and blue-green eyes as well as wearing blue boots.
  • Is an Underdog: Quasimodo was initially deemed an outcast because of his deformities, but he gained their respect and admiration as a result of his heroism.
  • Is a True Hero: Quasimodo saves Esmeralda from being executed and fights off against Frollo and his soldiers to save Paris from burning to the ground without asking for benefits.
  • Is a Mascot with Attitude: Despite his challenging circumstances, Quasimodo shows immense strength, resilience, and bravery. His acrobatic skills and agility make him a visually striking character, and his defiance against Frollo's injustice highlights his rebellious spirit. Quasimodo's unique style, inner strength, and his journey from isolation to heroism make him not just a symbol of inner beauty and bravery, but also of the power to overcome adversity with determination and heart.

Trivia[]
