~ Pim in "Frowning Friends." |
Pim Pimling is one of the two main protagonists (alongside Charlie Dompler) of the surreal animated comedy series Smiling Friends. He is a short, pudgy, pink critter who is extremely optimistic, kind-hearted, and naive.
Pim works at the Smiling Friends Inc. company alongside his coworker Charlie, where their job is to help people become happy and solve their problems. While Charlie is cynical and realistic, Pim serves as his happy-go-lucky counterpart who genuinely believes in the company's mission to spread happiness. He also works alongside his other employees, Allan Red and Glep, and his boss, Mr. Boss.
He is voiced by the series' co-creator, Michael Cusack.
What Makes Him a Shonen Hero?[]
- Heroic/Honorable: He tries to make all of his clients smile and become happy. He attempts (and inadvertently succeeds) to stop Desmond from committing suicide, stopped Oscar's tyranny over Spamtopia (where everyone was executed if they looked him in the eye), and he tried to help the victims of the Frowning Friends get over their cynicism due to the company's manipulation.
- Energetic: He is super energetic, especially when he learns he will embark on a quest. In one episode he he runs out of Mr. Boss's office in a frenzy saying, "Let's go out there and make people SMILE!"
- Stubborn: Sometimes he gets a bit upset at Charlie for criticizing him and his outlook, and it can result in petty arguments between them. He also gets quite jealous due to Charlie stealing his spotlight as the Enchanted Forest's hero.
- Pursues a Big-End Goal: Pim wants to make the world a better place for everything and everyone.
- Hard-Working: He never gives up on his goals and loves his job, especially compared to Charlie, who is far lazier when it comes to his duties as a Smiling Friend. At one point, Pim tries to convince Charlie to stop acting so apathetically during their holiday season work, and God literally intervenes in order to improve Charlie's attitude towards his job.
- Unintelligent: He's not outright stupid, but he is naive, and often acts foolishly. One infamous example is when he yelled "I LOVE KIDS!!!" in a public, suburban neighborhood without realizing that it might come across negatively.
- Optimistic: One of his defining traits. Pim is a foil to his partner Charlie and always tries to see the best in absolutely everything. For instance, he refused to give up on the extremely depressed and nihilistic Desmond (who literally held a revolver to his head the entire time) despite Charlie saying he was too far gone.
- Idealistic: Pim has a romanticized view of the world due to his positivity, and it can sometimes cross into unrealistic territory.
- Determined: He never gives up on any quest or client, always determined to accomplish what he believes is right.
- Self-Sacrificing: Pim dedicates his time to helping other people rather than himself. At one point, he sacrifices a potential significant other in Jennifer after seeing that Shrimp was crying over her.
- Resilient: Even when he is arrested by the Frowning Friends, he refuses to give up, still calling them out on their nihilistic propaganda while insisting that their negative view of the world is untrue.
- Youthful: Despite being 33 years old, he is a kid at heart with a young attitude and energy.
- Believes in the Power of Friendship: He values his friendship with Charlie greatly (and the others), and often believes that with friends together, more can be accomplished.
- Possesses Plot Armor: He is one of the main characters and could never die due to the narrative of the show. He even survived when Oscar was going to execute him, simply due to the happenstance that Oscar was his former penpal and recognized the prayer he made up.
- Unnatural Hairstyle: His single strand of "hair" is actually an exposed nerve ending
- Has Rivals/Mentors: His mentor is Mr. Boss and his rivals are the Frowning Friends.
- Has an Idol: His idol is Mr. Boss in some respects, as Boss often gives Pim advice on how to do his job while sharing his magnetic personality.
- Mischievous: He pulls a scare prank on Charlie in "Erm, the Boss Finds Love?" and laughs about it.
- Forgiving: He easily forgives Oscar for attempting to execute him and inflicting harm on the population, consoling him about his eye insecurity.
- Is a Primary-Color Champion: He wears a white shirt and blue pants.
- Is a Challenge Seeker: He enjoys the thrill of finding new ways to help people and loves experiencing new things. He also notes how excited he was as a kid to adventure into the enchanted forest, and was enlivened at the opportunity to do so as an adult.
- Is an Underdog: He's treated like a scapegoat sometimes due to his unwavering buoyancy in the face of the absurd, and often dark, Smiling Friends universe.
- Is a True Hero: He is fully dedicated to helping other people and rarely acts in selfish ways, as it is truthfully his main passion in life.
- Is a Mascot with Attitude: He is fun-loving, optimistic, and energetic, giving him a lovable attitude. We can even see some of his more risk-taking side in "Charlie, Pim, and Bill vs the Alien," where he begins taking a bunch of extraterrestrial drugs.
