Papyrus is the deuteragonist of the 2015 indie role-playing game Undertale.

What Makes Him a Shonen Hero?[]

  • Heroic/Honorable: Despite Papyrus initially wants to capture Frisk, Papyrus is one of the few Monsters who does not kill Frisk and attempts to befriend Frisk, even in Genocide Route.
  • Courageous/Reckless: In Genocide Route, Papyrus is one of the Monsters who stands up against Frisk despite knowing that he would be killed.
  • Believes in the Power of Friendship: During Undyne's chase into Hotland, Papyrus calls Frisk and suggests that they try to befriend Undyne. While he was unaware of Undyne trying to kill the player at the time, during the Pacifist Route, his suggestion worked and the human eventually befriends Undyne later in the game.
    • In general, Papyrus deeply values the monsters (and Frisk should they befriend him) he has a close bond with.
  • Energetic: Papyrus is constantly shown to be energetic. Papyrus uses capitalized words in nearly all his quotes and Papyrus' theme reflects this.
  • Stubborn: Papyrus is constantly shown to be stubborn. A prominent example is that Papyrus waited outside of Undyne's house all night and begged her to accept him into the Royal Guard after Undyne initially refuses.
  • Pursues a Big-End Goal: Papyrus attempts to become the Royal Guard.
  • Optimistic: Papyrus is optimistic. An example is that Papyrus believes that Frisk can become good even before his death in Genocide Route and his awareness of Frisk's genocidal intent in Genocide Route.
  • Has Mentors: Undyne is technically his mentor, though Undyne does not want him to be a Royal Guard as Undyne feels that Papyrus does not have the heart of a Royal Guard.
