Now get out there and make someone smile...
~ Mr. Boss in the pilot.
Yep! Guess I'm OOGLY-GOO!!
~ Mr. Boss before having a psychotic breakdown, also one of his most famous quotes.

Mr. Boss is the overarching protagonist of the surrealist animated comedy Smiling Friends. He is the owner of the eponymous business, dedicated to making various clients smile.

Boss appoints Pim Pimling and Charlie Dompler with counseling, and is also the employer of Allan Red and Glep. He's incredibly enthusiastic about his business and loves his employees like they were his family, though he is highly eccentric and suffers from mental issues.

He is voiced by Marc M..

What Makes Him a Shonen Hero?[]

  • Heroic/Honorable: Mr. Boss runs a benevolent charity business dedicated to improving and saving people's lives. For example, he sent Charlie and Pim to stop a suicidal Desmond from killing himself, which they inadvertently succeeded with. Also when the Frowning Friends were attempting to dominate the world with their nihilism and commit genocide on Puerto Ricans, he attempted to shoot them down, thereby stopping their agenda. He later cheered Grim (of the Frowning Friends) up after the latter started crying due to the attempted assassination, which helped him give up on evil and become happy.
  • Courageous/Reckless: He storms into the Frowning Friends office without a second thought.
  • Energetic: Despite his old age, Mr. Boss is full of energy and charisma, and is even quite athletic.
  • Stubborn: When discussing with the businessmen thought-forms about how to successfully compete with the Frowning Friends in business, he says that none of their ideas are helpful and gives up on listening to them, instead doing what he "should've done from the start."
  • Pursues a Big-End Goal: Mr. Boss wants to make the world a better place with his business by helping people find joy.
  • Hard-Working: He works hard at his business and is often tending to his duties as CEO.
  • Optimistic: He expects good outcomes, especially in his employees who he encourages, and often sees the best in people, even villains like Grim whom he redeemed through heartening.
  • Determined: Boss never gives up and is always committed to his goals.
  • Unpredictable: Infamously, he is very eccentric and even dissociative to the point where he has moments of mania and extremely bizarre behavior. Examples include his random urges to kill figures like Mr. Frog and Rotten the Snowman, transforming into a dog or demonic creatures, and arguing with an evil, split personality.
  • Self-Sacrificing: He spends his time helping others with his business rather than seeking personal gain.
  • Youthful: Despite being elderly, he is fun-loving and youthful. He also enjoys video games in his office.
  • Believes in the Power of Friendship: He views all of his employees as his friends and values what they do, even claiming that they are among his biggest loves in life.
  • Possesses Plot Armor: He's the overarching character in the show and cannot die as a result. He even survived Oscar's attempt to execute him.
  • Spiky Hair/Pompadour/Unnatural Hairstyle/Unnatural Hair Color: He is balding with dark grey, natural hair surrounding his bald spot, but he wears a mismatched light grey toupee to cover it.
  • Short-Tempered: He can get angry at times, especially during his moments of mania, such as when he grew upset at the Frowning Friends stealing his business or when his employees couldn't get rid of Rotten like he asked.
  • Has Rivals/Mentors: The Frowning Friends are his rivals.
  • Big Eater/Drinker: He's shown to enjoy eating a lot, and in one instance, he slurped up a plate of spaghetti with sauce all around his mouth.
  • Mischievous: He pulls a scare prank on Charlie and also pretended at one point that Pim and Charlie had to assist pedophile Jared Fogle and make him smile - only, it was just a joke.
  • Forgiving: When Gnarly of the Frowning Friends started crying after Mr. Boss pointed a gun at him, he forgives him and tells him that he should be happy that his idea drove him to jealousy, even after Gnarly had threatened to spread nihilism and enact genocide on Puerto Ricans. Grim ends up redeeming himself after this.
  • Is a Primary-Color Champion: His suit is navy blue and his tie is yellow.
  • Is a Neglectful Parent: He gave Charlie and Allan his son Jason to take care of, which resulted in him undergoing metamorphosis with the duo thinking he died - no warning of this as a possibility was given from Boss. Jason later begins spreading toxic dust around the office and turning feral.
  • Is a True Hero: He lives to help others and says that his one true passion is his work.
  • Is a Mascot with Attitude: He has many lovable traits, is very charismatic, and has goofy antics, giving him a unique, comedic, and inspiring attitude.
