What Makes Him a Shonen Hero?[]
- Heroic/Honorable: Joseph is the second most admirable JoJo in the series, only beaten by his grandson, as he defeated the Pillar Men and helped greatly to defeat DIO. In addition, while he has a tendency to cheat, Joseph also is honorable and does show standards.
- Courageous/Reckless: Joseph has risked his life for the greater good many times, and only flees from a fight as a tactic, rather than cowardice.
- Energetic: Joseph is rather excitable to the point of being slightly hyperactive, even continuing to have this trait in his elder years, and is highly hotblooded in his acts of outsmarting his enemies.
- Pursues a Big-End Goal: After his daughter falls ill to DIO gaining The World with Jonathan’s body, Joseph decides to go to Egypt along with his grandson and several others to save her.
- Hard-Working: As lazy, laid-back, and naturally talented as he can be in Part 2, Joseph ultimately goes under hard training to improve his Hamon skills so that he can be prepared to fight the Pillar Men.
- Optimistic: No matter the situation, Joseph remains on the bright side of things.
- Possesses Plot Armor: Not only has Joseph survived multiple plane and car crashes, he also gets revived after being killed by DIO.
- Spiky Hair/Unnatural Hairstyle: In his youth, Joseph has spiky hair.
- Unnatural Hair Color: Amazingly, this is the opposite of Jonathan as he has purple hair in the anime but brown hair in the manga, in addition, he has blond hair in the OVA, which is odd for his age.
- Short-Tempered: Joseph has a noticeable inability to control his temper, to the point of getting expelled from school and being jailed 7 times for fighting before Battle Tendency.
- Even though he does become calmer as he became older, he still retains his wrath, to the point of beating up a Japanese man just because of his nationality.
- Mischievous: Joseph has a consistent mischievous side, teasing his enemies often and even insensitively claiming he was DIO to a shocked Jotaro.
- Has Rivals/Mentors: Joseph has a rivalry with Caesar and they both share the same teacher with Lisa Lisa.
- Rebellious: He has a lack of respect for authority in his youth (save for perhaps his grandmother and later his mother), defying policemen and gangsters alike.
- Tragic Past: Joseph grew up without parents because a minion of Dio who survived killed his father George, leading to his mother Elizabeth killing the minion with her Hamon abilities, causing her to change her name and relocate to Italy. As a result, he grew up thinking they both died, mostly because his guardians' fear that he would die young like his father and grandfather.
- Is a Delinquent: While not as much of a troublemaker as his son and grandson, Joseph used to fight people a lot in his youth to the point of facing expulsion from school and jail time.
- Is a Chick Magnet: Has single-handedly naturally attracted multiple women in the series ever since he was at a relatively young age that wasn't just Suzi Q, when Joseph got older, he also attracted the likes of Mariah and Tomoko.
