Arnold Shortman is the titular main protagonist of the Hey Arnold! franchise.
He is voiced by J.D. Daniels (original pilot), Lane Toran (season 1), Phillip Van Dyke (seasons 2–3), Spencer Klein (season 4; 17/20 episodes in season 5; The Movie), Rusty Flood (as a baby/toddler in "Parents Day" and "Helga on the Couch"), Alex D. Linz ("April Fools Day" & "The Journal"), Mason Vale Cotton (Jungle Movie), and Zane VanWicklyn (Nickelodeon Extreme Tennis & Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3: Slime Speedway).
What Makes Him a Shonen Hero?[]
- Heroic/Honorable: Arnold's most heroic feat is curing the Green-Eyed People after a sleep sickness contaminated their city, including his parents Miles and Stella.
- Courageous: Arnold is willing to risk his life to save his neighborhood from being destroyed.
- Stubborn: Arnold refuses to give up regardless of what others say.
- Pursues a Big-End Goal: Growing up without his parents being involved in his life, Arnold wants to find out what happened to them and why they leave him with his grandparents when he was a baby.
- Hard-Working: Arnold doesn't believe in cheating or taking shortcuts and instead put in the effort to what he wants to do.
- Optimistic: While he has moments of self-doubt and depression, Arnold is overall an optimistic kid.
- Believes in the Power of Friendship: Arnold sees the good in many people despite their bad first-impressions.
- Possesses Plot Armor: Alongside Gerald and Helga, Arnold survives the bus crash.
- Oblivious to Love: Arnold was largely unaware of Helga's crush on him due to her constantly bullying him and her refusal to express her true feelings to him.
- Spiky Hair: Arnold has spiky hair.
- Has a Rival: Arnold competes with Wolfgang in various sports.
- Tragic Past: When Arnold was a baby, his parents left him under the care of his grandparents for an expedition and never came back. This incident leaves Arnold with abandonment issues and the determination to find out what happened to his parents.
