Shonen Hero Proposal: Wan from The Legend of Korra

What is the Work?

The Legend of Korra is the sequel series to Avatar: The Last Airbender. It follows Aang's reincarnation Korra, as she continues Aang's legacy of bringing balance to the modern-day world.

Who are they?

Avatar Wan is is one of the two overarching protagonists (alongside Raava) of the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise.

What Makes Him a Shonen Hero?

Heroic/Honorable: Wan confronts and eventually seals Vaatu, and devotes his life to maintain peace among Four Nations and the Spirit World.

Courageous/Reckless: Wan is not afraid of confronting enemies even the powerful Vaatu.

Stubborn: Wan refuses to give up fighting against the unsealed Vaatu despite being beaten by the latter, and willingly allows Raava to possess him despite knowing that he could die because of the possession.

Pursues a Big-End Goal: Wan has devoted his life to maintain peace among Four Nations and the Spirit World.

Hard-Working: Wan has trained himself to be capable of using different bending, and has been keeping peace among Four Nations and the Spirit World.

Optimistic: Wan is generally optimistic despite initially living in poverty, and his optimistic attitude allows him to become a capable peacekeeper.

Possesses Plot Armor: Wan would die because of being possessed by Raava if he did not prenatally fuse with Raava thanks to the spirit portal during the Harmonic Convergence.

Has Mentors: Wan has learned different bending from lion turtles.

Verdict

I vote to Avatar Yes. His shonen traits has kept until his death.

Shonen Hero Proposal: Toph Beifong

Alright, this is my first proposal for 2024. To be fair, I am taking a temporary break from proposing anime characters as my current list of candidates from anime (Tanjiro, Gon Freecss, Gohan, the Part 4 Joestar Group) are overall not happening as of now as I have never watched Hunter X Hunter, not watched enough of DBZ and Demon Slayer to judge Tanjiro and Gohan, and don’t feel like doing so for the PT4 Joestar Group. So, today I will be proposing:

Avatar: The Last Airbender is a 2005 animated show created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. I won’t explain more

What Makes Her a Shonen Hero?

Heroic/Honorable: Toph has helped save the world from the Fire Nation, which in advance, saves the life of the entire Earth Kingdom population because of Ozai’s plan to commit omnicide on it with Sozin’s Comet’s power boost.
Courageous/Reckless: Toph is known for her recklessness and never shows fear in a fight.
Energetic: Unlike Aang, Toph shows an extreme enthusiasm in fighting.

Stubborn: Toph is easily the most stubborn member of Team Avatar as she has done a lot of things despite objection from others.
Pursues a Big-End Goal: Toph ultimately decides to teach Aang earthbending to prove to her parents she is no weakling despite being blind.
Spiky Hair: In one scene, Toph is shown with a spiky bedhead.
Short-Tempered: Toph has a very vibrant temper and can be brutally honest with her friends.
Has a Mentor: The badgermoles taught her earthbending
Rebellious: Toph has been shown to disobey her parents’ rules and restrictions on her and go in wrestling matches

Verdict?

Easy yes for the Melon Lord. Tbh have always seen Toph as an even better candidate for the Stock Shonen Hero trope than Aang due to her lack of regard for rules and passion for fighting. So, yeah.

Shonen Hero Proposal: Tak

I call upon the Power of Juju to make me a Shonen Hero!!!!

What is the Work?

Tak and the Power of Juju is a video game series created by Nickelodeon, THQ and Avalanche. The trilogy follows Tak, a young shaman, as he begins his journey as an unlikely hero to save the people of Pupanunu who were transformed into sheep by the evil Tlaloc.

Who is the Candidate?

Tak is the main protagonist of the Tak and the Power of Juju trilogy. He is voiced by Jason Marsden.

What Makes Him a Shonen Hero?

Heroic/Honorable: Tak has saved the Pupanunu Village and the entire world from Tlaloc and the Black Mist Tribe.
Courageous/Reckless: Tak doesn't hesitate to save others, even when the odds are against him.
Energetic: Being a kid living in a jungle, he has an adventurous and excitable streak.
Stubborn: Tak is willing to step up to do what is right despite his mentor Jibolba's objections due to not being the prophesied Mighty Warrior.
Pursues a Big-End Goal: Tak wants to learn various types of magic to become a great shaman in his own right.
Hard-Working: Throughout the trilogy, Tak trains hard both with his physical abilities and magic after saving the village from Tlaloc in the first game. This is shown in the sequels, in which he is able to perform Juju spells without relying on relics.
Optimistic: Despite of his downfalls, Tak refuses to lose hope.
Believes in the Power of Friendship: Tak befriends many Jujus who help him in his journey to save the world.
Possesses Plot Armor: Tak manages to survive through dangerous explosions.
Short-Tempered: Though friendly and easygoing, Tak can lose his patience from time to time, especially with Lok's antics.
Has Rivals/Mentors: Jibolba is Tak's mentor and, in the third game, alongside Lok, he competed with the Grammazons, the Jibba Jabbas and the Black Mist.

Verdict?

I say yes. While he wasn't initially chosen by the Pupanunu People's prophecy to save the world, Tak chooses to step up to be the hero that the world needs.

Shonen Hero Proposal: Jimmy Neutron

What is the Work?

Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius is a Nickelodeon cartoon centering around Jimmy Neutron, an 11-year old with a genius IQ of 210 who create interesting inventions while navigating childhood in Retroville and stopping dangerous villains.

Who is the Candidate?

Jimmy Neutron is the titular main protagonist of the 2001 film Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius and the spin-off TV series The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. He is voiced by Debi Derryberry.

What Makes Him a Shonen Hero?

Heroic/Honorable: Jimmy has saved the world multiple times and, at times, the entire universe. He even saved another universe alongside Timmy Turner.
Courageous/Reckless: Jimmy is hardly ever afraid to face a battle to the point of being willing to risk his life to save the world.
Energetic: Jimmy can be very excitable at times, especially when it comes to his inventions.
Stubborn: Jimmy rarely listens to his parents and friends when it comes to his plans and goes for it anyway despite the potential consequences.
Pursues a Big-End Goal: Jimmy wants to use his inventions to defend the innocent from evil.
Hard-Working: Being an inventor, Jimmy puts in his time and effort to his creations, even if they backfire for him.
Optimistic: Though he can feel down at times, Jimmy will find the brighter side of the situations he gets into.
Believes in the Power of Friendship: Jimmy values his friends and would do anything to protect them.
Oblivious to Love: Jimmy was clueless of Cindy's crush on him due to her consistently bullying him.
Possesses Plot Armor: Jimmy manages to escape from places before they explode.
Unnatural Hairstyle: Jimmy's hair resembles a chocolate drop, which makes him stand out among the other characters.
Short-Tempered: Jimmy can be quick to lose his patience at times, especially when it comes to Cindy bullying him.
Has a Rival: Jimmy has a snobby and rich rival named Eustace Strytch.
Has an Idol: Jimmy idolizes Jet Fusion, the world's greatest secret agent.

Verdict?

I say yes because he has saved the world many times and wants to be respected as a heroic scientist.
